Pest Alert Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive, wood-boring beetle that attacks Ash trees was detected in Wisconsin in late summer of 2008.  It is expected to spread quickly  in Wisconsin. An infected tree will show signs of gradual die-back that will take, on the average, three years to die.

Year one will show yellowing and leaf drop in the top third of the tree.

Year two will affect the second third and year three will take the lower third.

If you see yellowing in the top third, examine the base for many shoots. This is a sign that the tree is affected by Emerald Ash Borer. Look for a metallic green beetle that is 1/2" long. Also look for a D-shaped exit hole 2-3 mm in diameter. If you suspect damage to trees by this insect please contact Landscape Associates or your local UW Extension Office for confirmation and accurate logistics of this infestation.
