Prairie Garden & Native Plantings

Prairies and gardens using native plants such as; wildflowers, grasses, sedges and ferns require only a small amount of upkeep, are beautiful, help to prevent erosion and improve the soil.  Native plants also provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies and other desirable wildlife.  A prairie garden comes in all sizes and shapes.

Successful tips for a prairie garden:

* Garden area must be free of weeds and grasses.
* Prepare soil using organic materials, such as; compost, peat moss, and shredded leaves.
* Plant wildflower seeds and grasses or transplants.  Note that seeds typically do not bloom till the third year or later.  Transplants may bloom the first year.  Be sure to choose plants appropriate for the zone you live in and the type of soil you have.
* Weeding may be required the first year until the garden is established.  This is especially true if your garden is all organic.
