Spring Checklist
- Remove dead leaves from hostas.
- Cut back ornamental grasses. Shear them off near the base leaving 2-6" of old growth.
- Prune summer flowering shrubs in early spring before new growth. They usually bloom from new wood.
- Feed peonies with liquid fertilizer as they emerge.
- Wait till ground is frost-free before removing mulch; if temperatures rise early in season, remove part of the mulch but leave 2-3 inches. Remember, too much mulch may restrict the movement of water, air and nutrients into the root zone. This is one of the most frequent problems in declining landscapes.
- Till or spade soil deeply; if desired, add a slow-release flower garden fertilizer when planting.
- Evergreens that grow all season long can be pruned almost any time except late in the growing season. We prefer selective pruning on many shrubs, such as Boxwood and Taxus. Instead of using hedge shears, use your pruning scissors to make cuts down inside the plant so the cuts aren't obvious. This results in a more natural, less "shaved" appearance.
